Issued one 4” x 8.25” card per box of 12 Boston Garter’s, these large advertising cards are so rare that only five graded examples exist, all by SGC. This is the only professionally graded example of Christy Mathewson. Rarity is a word thrown around quite often in this hobby, but in this case with the 1912 Boston Garter’s, that adjective is truly accurate. If the checklist of available players were not on the reverse of these magnificent trade cards, the current collecting public would likely never know the true amount of available subjects. There are 16 players which comprise the 1912 Boston Garter set, one player per team, and the Mathewson card is the key to this extremely rare issue. These cards depict the players relaxing while getting dressed before a game, knowing their Boston Garter’s will help them perform well on the field. Behind the player are very visual baseball stadium scenes, usually of players warming up. This is one of two or three known Mathewson 1912 Boston Garters. This example is graded by 10 POOR 1 by SGC, but appears much nicer on the front as the paper loss on the reverse results in the SCG grade. The card has multiple creases, limited to the corners and peripheral areas, and no creases which intersect the image of a relaxed and apparently confident Mathewson. There is the appropriate light corner rounding, but the card has bright color and displays very nice on the front. The back has a large area of paper loss, relegated to the top edge and left side. The paper loss on the left edge has removed the names of the National League players and some of the other text. Despite the technical grade, this is a very presentable card, still vibrant with bright colors and a virtually crease-free image of Mathewson. The rarity of this offered item cannot be understated and also its magnitude as the key card to this entire 16-card extremely rare issue. RESERVE MET.
